Leader spotlight: Rebecca Garger – #BalanceforBetter

The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is ‘Balance for Better’, which focuses on the need to build a more gender-balanced world. At Hays, we support and value diversity in all forms—not just gender—and believe that a diverse workforce and inclusive culture are essential to business success. After four years at Hays, our Director of Financial Planning and Analysis Rebecca Garger, discusses how we can achieve the right balance by tapping into the natural talents of our employees.

1. What are some ways you ensure there is balance within the office?
I try to understand what our employees’ strength and weaknesses are, so we can delegate the right task for the right person. We want to work on employee’s weaknesses, but more importantly utilize their strengths. Objectively observing how people work in different environments and having open and honest conversation with them are some ways to determine people’s motivations and strengths. Making the most of people’s different skill sets helps us achieve the right balance and build high performing teams.

2. How do you lead by example?
My role involves having oversight of our organization’s finances. We work with each of our partners to understand what they’re doing, so we can budget carefully and tell a story from a number’s standpoint. I lead by working with stakeholders across the business and asking for feedback, so we can find answers that will help us achieve our objectives.

3. How do you benefit from balance both personally and professionally?
I can focus on things that matter most to me because of balance. This allows me to grow in all areas of life. Having a balanced lifestyle enables me to spend more time with my family and cultivate my relationships. Professionally, I’m also in a good spot where I’m respected for my expertise, dedication, and hard work.

4. What motivated you to reach a leadership role in your career?
Being financially independent was one of my main career drivers. I didn’t want to rely on anyone but myself, and I knew I had to work hard to get to where I am today. As well, working towards success in any areas of life helps build important life skills including confidence and positivity.

5. What advice would you give to female professionals who are starting out their career?
My advice would be to overcome your mental hindrances including any negativity biases. These obstacles interfere with your ability to focus on what needs to be done. Throughout my career, I never thought that I was prevented from progressing in my career because I’m a woman. It’s important to take control of your situation, focus on what you want, and go after it. Finding a leader who can support you, whether male or female, can also help unlock your potential.
