VP of Construction to join a Non-Profit to help scale their Residential Construction Division.

Your new company:
HAYS are partnered with a non-profit organization in the DC metro area looking to hire a Vice President of Construction to help fuel their continued growth and delivery of new residential homes. This newly established role is designed to lead and develop a high-performing construction team, with accountability for delivering projects efficiently, safely, and to a high standard of quality. The position emphasizes cultivating strong subcontractor and volunteer engagement while ensuring that construction efforts produce meaningful, lasting impact within the communities served.

The successful candidate is a purpose-driven leader with a strong background in construction with a high preference for professionals coming from a residential homebuilder background. Commercial construction candidates will also be considered. Great position for a Vice President to bring creativity to a role, develop and optimize systems, lead high-performing teams, and scale operations in a way that supports long-term growth and mission delivery.

Your new role:
  • Partner closely with the President, leadership team and the Board to shape strategy and growth within the construction department.
  • Translate mission-driven goals into clear, actionable construction and development plans.
  • Drive strong collaboration across departments to ensure alignment and execution.
  • Foster a culture centered on accountability, inclusion, safety, and continuous improvement.
  • Lead all residential construction efforts from start to finish, including new build and renovation programs.
  • Deliver projects on time, on budget, within defined contracts, to high-quality standards.
  • Maintain a steady pipeline of work through effective planning and scheduling.
  • Manage budgets, costs, and financial performance with strong fiscal discipline.
  • Ensure compliance, mitigate risks, and maintain a strong safety culture across all operations.
  • Build relationships with municipalities, development partners, subcontractors and community stakeholders.
  • Introduce innovative building practices to improve efficiency and sustainability.
  • Recruit, lead, and develop a high-performing construction team.
  • Support employee growth through coaching, mentoring, and performance management.
  • Promote meaningful volunteer engagement and recognize their contributions.

What you’ll need to succeed:
  • 15+ years of progressive construction experience working for a construction general contractor. Open to professionals currently in a Project Manager, Construction Manager, Director, Executive or Vice President roles.
  • Deep expertise in construction operations and project delivery, with a strong preference for residential homebuilding; candidates with commercial construction backgrounds are also welcome to apply.
  • Proven ability to successfully deliver high-volume, concurrent projects, including both new construction and renovation, while maintaining quality, schedule, and cost targets.
  • Experienced leader with 5+ years managing and developing high-performing teams of superintendents and/or project managers, with direct accountability for performance, coaching, and talent growth.
  • Proven experience managing budgets, contracts, subcontractor coordination and scheduling.
  • Experience working in or with nonprofit, community development, or volunteer-driven environments.
  • Commitment, passion and interest to the values and mission of the organization.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Architecture, Engineering or Business Management highly preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with construction/project management systems.
  • Live and are accessible to the organization office, stakeholder meetings and projects across the DC, MD and VA. This is a 5 days on-site position.
