Unified Communications Manager - New York City, Washington D.C., Boston

The Manager of Unified Communications will spearhead the organization's strategy, implementation, and operations in unified communications. This position entails leading a team of engineers and administrators who manage platforms such as Microsoft Teams, Microsoft 365 email, Microsoft OneDrive, and Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM). The ideal candidate will ensure seamless communication services across the enterprise, optimize systems, and deliver an exceptional user experience. This role demands hands-on technical expertise, strong leadership abilities, and experience in migrating legacy systems to modern cloud-based platforms.
Key Responsibilities:
Team Leadership:
- Manage a team of engineers and administrators, providing mentorship and career development.
- Assign tasks, monitor progress, and ensure team deliverables meet standards and timelines.
Migration & Transformation:
- Lead telephony migrations from legacy platforms to Microsoft Teams Calling.
- Ensure minimal disruption during migrations, including testing and user training.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to migrate solutions to cloud environments.
Strategic Planning:
- Develop and execute a unified communications roadmap aligned with business goals.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend improvements.
Platform Management & Administration:
- Administer Microsoft OneDrive, including storage policies and data governance.
- Oversee Microsoft Teams for chat, video conferencing, and telephony.
- Manage Microsoft 365 email administration, ensuring security and compliance.
- Maintain Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM) during transition to Microsoft Teams Calling.
Operational Excellence:
- Monitor system performance, uptime, and security for all UC platforms.
- Establish policies, procedures, and documentation for system administration.
- Ensure compliance with security standards and industry regulations.
Call Routing & Features:
- Design and implement advanced call routing features within Microsoft Teams.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex telephony issues.
Stakeholder Collaboration:
- Partner with IT leadership, business units, and vendors to align communication tools with organizational needs.
- Serve as the escalation point for complex technical issues.
User Support & Training:
- Oversee end-user training programs for Microsoft Teams and other tools.
- Coordinate with helpdesk teams to resolve escalated support tickets.
Proficiencies:
- Familiarity with network protocols (SIP, VoIP, QoS) and telephony infrastructure
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
- Proficiency with MS Teams calling (voice policies, dial plans, PSTN/SBC integration)
- Project management experience with a track record of delivering initiatives on time and within budget
- Experience with call center technologies and reporting tools
- Expertise in Microsoft 365 administration (Exchange Online, Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint, Entra)
- Strong knowledge of Cisco CUCM configuration, troubleshooting, and maintenance
- Exceptional leadership and team management abilities
- Excellent communication skills for explaining technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
Qualifications:
- Minimum 7 years of IT experience, with 3-5 years focused on unified communications and collaboration technologies
- Bachelor’s degree in IT, Computer Science, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- Hands-on experience with Microsoft 365 Mail administration and OneDrive management
- Familiarity with PowerShell scripting for Microsoft 365 automation
- Experience with additional collaboration tools (e.g., Zoom, Slack)
- 3+ years managing a team of technical professionals (engineers/administrators)
- Preferred certifications: Microsoft 365 Certified: Teams Administrator, Cisco CCNP Collaboration, ITIL
- Understanding of cybersecurity best practices for unified communications systems
- Vendor management experience with Microsoft, Cisco, or telephony service providers
- Proven experience managing Microsoft Teams for chat, conferencing, and enterprise voice/calling
- Successful migration of telephony platforms (e.g., Cisco CUCM) to cloud-based solutions like Microsoft Teams Calling
- Knowledge of cloud telephony providers (Direct Routing, Operator Connect) for Microsoft Teams
- Experience with Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM) or similar telephony solutions, including call routing and system maintenance
Compensation and Benefits:
- Salary range: $133,400 to $175,000 annually, based on experience.
