The skills shortages in the US technology industry is directly impacting businesses. According to a recent report, “59% of CIOs fear the tech talent gap will prevent their organization from keeping up with the pace of change.” Part of the problem has been a lack of skilled talent entering the workforce. So what can be done to close the skills gap and who is taking responsibility?
Some US companies are starting to partner directly with colleges to offer training before they even enter the workforce. IBM’s Academic Initiative is “building skills for a Smarter Planet” by providing their software, coursework and access to hardware to schools and professors free of charge. As well as developing their skills, students can apply to job opportunities at IBM via mainframe and mobile-development applications. By offering this type of training, undergraduates are exposed to specific areas of IT such as cloud computing and big data in the workplace at an earlier stage of their career. Initiatives like this are a great way to help build the knowledge the industry needs and raise your company’s employer brand with the next generation of IT workers.
Government agencies are also providing IT professionals with training resources to help upskill the current workforce. In a recent article, Steve Weston, Hays CIO, explains that tech workers must be prepared for evolving technologies, which will help close the skills gap. In the US, P21 (the Partnership for 21st Century Skills) are pushing policies that focus on educational readiness for the digital economy. Initiatives that help keep the current US workforce up to date with changes in IT are essential to tackling skills shortages.
It will take time, but by making more training programs available to both new and existing members of the workforce, the IT industry can help close the gap in skills and prevent future shortages.
