Many junior and entry-level roles will require strong creative ability, good technical and organisational skills, and specific degree qualifications and exam results, such as basic maths (for making product changes, measurements, percentages and fractions).
Top tips for jobseekers
Your CV needs to be an accurate document reflecting your technical experience, and should include the following:
- Exact job title, salary (including bonus/benefits)
- Who you reported to
- Number of direct reports
- Who you liaised with, e.g. designers, buyers
- If you worked or visited external factories – where they were, e.g. Hungary, Hong Kong
- Garment/product type, e.g. ladies/children's/home. Be specific.
- Who you supplied at each company, e.g. Top Shop, River Island, Laura Ashley.
- Fabrics worked with: denim, woven, jersey, knitwear, tailoring outwear.
A comprehensive portfolio and considered CV will enable you to talk more coherently, concisely and lucidly through your experience at interview.
