Public Procurement - Latest Salary & Benefits Trends for Purchasing Professionals
This is a summary of an article that appeared in the August 2007 issue of Government Opportunities (GO) magazine.
Raising the profile of jobs in procurement
“Over the past 12 months, the profile of procurement has significantly risen and as a result the market is buoyant. Despite this, salary levels have largely remained unchanged.”
Pat Law, Managing Director, Hays Purchasing & Supply
Not-for-profit organisations attract a sizeable volume of applications despite the lower salaries on offer. Salaries for purchasing roles below executive level in manufacturing and production have risen by less than 2% nationally for last two years.
Furthermore, the structuring of purchasing departments has led to range of applications from both within the public sector and externally, from commerce.
Greater number of UK procurement jobs
The benefits of Lyons Review (2004) have had a particular bearing on the North West, and with more departments setting up outside London by 2010, the possibilities for jobseekers outside the London and the South East area (or those wishing to relocate) are improving.
Growth at junior level (public sector) has been greater than 5% and the three key elements driving this have been: 1) Value of supply chain; 2) the number of universities offering courses and 3) the work of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT).
