Diversity and challenges of rail jobs
You could working on a diverse projects, from station canopy designs, new stations and refurbishment of existing stations, the provision of civils infrastructure for resignalling schemes or maintenance framework contracts identifying and designing station repairs.
Part of your function will include the preparation of infrastructure design calculations, feasibility reports and design drawings for railway and industrial infrastructure projects as well as the quality, environment and safety elements.
You could also be undertaking projects of track form and alignment, bridges and tunnels, passenger stations, freight terminals, maintenance and support facilities, and embankments and cuttings.
Rail industry infrastructure and design experience
Academic requirements include a civil engineering degree or equivalent. You could be working towards CEng MICE or CEng MIStructE or towards Chartership. Experience of structures assessments and design (AutoCAD) within the rail industry and knowledge of infrastructure design projects using BS5950 and BS8110 are definite pluses. As well as technical requirements, you will need to have first rate client interface and communication skills.
