Responsibility for design, validation, specification, selection and services relating to electrical equipment and systems falls to those in electrical engineer jobs. Electrical design engineers deal with design, surveying and produce reports.
You could be working for building services or electrical services teams, where your knowledge of diverse electrical equipment in areas such as lighting, security, public address systems and portable appliance testing will come into its own.
Background in electrical engineering
Qualifications needed are an electrical engineering/building services degree (BEng, CEng, MIEE) or HND equivalent and substantial experience working in an electrical engineering environment. Knowledge of power plants, experience within the Electricity Supply Industry and design or operation of electrical services are also beneficial. Knowledge of systems like Hevacomp is beneficial.
Other required skills are technical and/or project management capability associated with transmission (275 kV to 500kV) overhead lines. An understanding of UK CDM Regulations and/or National Grid standards are and added bonus. Experience in the utilisation of engineering software and CFD modelling is beneficial.
