CAD jobs

The rise of commercial and residential developments across the UK has meant that the demand for CAD jobs remains strong. The increasing need for affordable housing for first time buyers and key workers has resulted in an increase in residential building due to the sheer volume in demand.

Variety of CAD technician jobs

There are different CAD technician jobs and experience of a particular area will determine the type of engineering employment sought. The qualifications required will therefore vary depending on the route taken.

Structural CAD technicians are usually qualified in a related discipline ie ONC in Construction or the Built Environment. Reinforced concrete detailing, bar bending schedule production for structural steel are examples of skills sought.

CAD design skills and qualifications

A common requirement for Civil CAD technicians is an HNC or ONC in Civil Engineering. Desired practical skills also include knowledge of highway design packages such as AutoTRACK, Key Lines and Key Signs. For drainage and infrastructure, previous experience in Micro Drainage and MicroStation is usually requested. City & Guilds AutoCAD Levels 1, 2 and 3, in 2D and 3D are excellent qualifications to have.

Employers realise the need to improve remuneration and benefits packages if they are to secure the best talent, given the skills shortages that persist in certain areas. Salaries for CAD jobs and CAD technician jobs have remained constant over the past year despite salary expectations rising.
