UK WORKERS RELIEVE OZ SKILLS CRISIS
The huge demand for engineers across the world has put a significant pressure on many countries, including Australia. The local market in Australia has lost a lot of people to Asia, the UK and Dubai which has made the influx of engineers from the UK even more critical.
“Australian employers are excited by the opportunity of working with UK professionals and the feeling is definitely mutual. However, it is a misperception that Australian workers have an easier life and work fewer hours than people in the UK; the pressure, the hours worked and the management style are similar to the UK. But, there are beautiful holidays on your doorstep, the weather is good, Australians have a laid back nature and of course there are the beautiful beaches” says Adam Shapley, from Hays Consulting Engineering in Australia.
For these very reasons Australia is always one of the top destinations that UK workers have in mind when considering relocating overseas. It is therefore positive that engineers are in demand across the country. For example, civil designers are needed for roads, rail, civil land subdivisions and project delivery in Victoria and New South Wales. Queensland and Western Australia are also looking for engineers at all levels.
Given this high demand for engineers from the UK, Hays GlobaLink has recently been established as part of the UK’s leading recruitment consultancy, Hays Consulting Engineering. The new division finds work for UK jobseekers who are looking to relocate to Australia and New Zealand.
Diane Townson, manager of Hays GlobaLink, says: “The local pool of jobseekers is already stretched and employers are able to gain sponsorship visas with relative ease for professionals who are looking to move to Australia. They are a valued resource to local employers and given the skills shortages workers will also benefit from salary increases across the country. For example, an engineer with five years experience can earn up to £45,000.”
