Interim and Temporary

There has been a definite increase in interim marketing jobs, and with this shift, many marketers are choosing to make a career out of interim work.

Why choose interim work?

Organisations often require an interim manager, for example an interim marketing director, during periods of transition such as restructuring or acquisition or when the incumbent has left and no successor is in place or at a time of crisis. An interim manager can help refocus the organisation and keep it on track with its objectives.

Increasingly, there are opportunities for interims in both the public and private sectors, in areas such as PR, communications, branding and heading up the marketing function.

The benefits of interim marketing jobs include:

  • The flexible nature of work suits certain people
  • You will get exposure to project-driven environments and new challenges
  • Excellent remuneration and benefits - according to the Interim Management Association, senior interims will command day rates in the range of £500-1500
  • Work-life balance attraction: you choose when you work!

Interim work can be extremely fruitful, but it’s not the right choice for all. For some, it can be daunting - particularly during periods of economic downturn when work can be unreliable.

Key qualities for interim marketing jobs

If you are interested in pursuing a career as an interim marketing manager, then you should be able to demonstrate the following characteristics:

  • track record of problem solving and strategic thinking
  • specialist knowledge, skills and experience
  • be creative, charismatic and credible at board level
  • highly productive and able to add value from day one
  • flexible and available immediately

Temporary

Temporary recruitment, typically at mid-manager and more junior level, can also represent a flexible career choice for marketers, giving you the chance to ‘try before you buy’. Often companies need extra staff to cover holiday period absences and seasonal peaks and to boost team numbers during high profile campaigns, temporary recruitment often becomes a priority.

Temporary jobs in marketing can be a low-risk stop gap between jobs if you are uncertain about which career path to follow and can also provide you with great experience and exposure to different companies, products and marketing tactics.
