Case study - International law firm
Adam, an assistant solicitor working for Clyde & Co in Dubai offers some timely advice for those wanting to work overseas.
Personal background
I was educated in Sydney at the University of New South Wales where I obtained a Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Laws. I then worked at Allens Arthur Robinson in the Corporate and Finance departments and was there from 2000 to 2004.
Why did you want to move overseas?
I decided to move overseas as I wanted to be able to gain a broader experience and believed that I would be able to do this through greater international exposure.
What are you doing now?
I'm working as a Corporate and Finance lawyer in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The position is with a UK law firm called Clyde & Co.
What's the best thing about working and living overseas?
The best thing is that you get the chance to meet a diverse range of people, both personally and professionally. Many of the people that I have met have had an extremely entrepreneurial spirit.
And the worst?
One of the worst things about working overseas is being away from my family.
Have you got any hints and tips for someone planning to work overseas?
I would recommend that you do your research thoroughly and never be afraid to speak to people already working in the location in which you wish to work. Another important thing is to make sure that you keep an open mind about things that you will encounter and don't be too quick to judge.
