Assessment Centres will be located in Manchester, Glasgow, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Stoke-on-Trent, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Leeds, Reading, Bristol, Central London, Nottingham, Sheffield and Leicester.

Hays Healthcare is looking to recruit the following staff for each of the above Assessment Centres:

  • Assessment Centre Clinic Manager (F Grade or Band 6)
  • Registered Nurses (E Grade or Band 5)
  • Phlebotomists
  • Healthcare Assistants
  • Receptionists

In order to work for UK Biobank you will be required to complete the Hays Healthcare Registration Pack that will be sent out following your initial application. Whilst all the positions described below are available on a temporary basis, Assessment Centres will open for a minimum of 6 months, there may be opportunities to extend work on the study after that time.

Job Descriptions

All roles will require positive and motivated people with a flexible approach to work and the ability to cover daytime, evening and weekend shifts.

Assessment Centre Clinic Manager
Person Specification – Nurse (F Grade or Band 6)
You will need first level Nursing & Midwifery Council registration, Venepucture certificated training and experience as well as excellent IT skills (Microsoft Office or equivalent). Experience of taking charge of a ward or outpatient department is essential and previous experience of research/audit and an understanding of research methodologies would be advantageous. You must be able to appreciate the need to comply with Standard Operating Procedures and have the ability to work under pressure and as part of a team. Communicating well with others and dealing with members of the public in a polite and diplomatic fashion are also essential.

The role will include:

  • Performing duties commensurate with Assessment Centre Nurse post
  • Documenting and reporting serious adverse events and incidents
  • Management of Assessment Centre Staff
  • Management of off-duty, staff annual leave and absence periods
  • Cascading information from central office to Assessment Centre Staff
  • Promoting a healthy and safe environment for staff, participants and visitors
  • Ensuring the Assessment Centre runs smoothly on a day-to-day basis in accordance with UK Biobank quality standards and the Standard Operating Procedures and protocols

Assessment Centre Nurse
Person Specification – Nurse (Grade E or Band 5)
You will need first or second level Nursing & Midwifery Council registration, Venepucture certificated training and experience as well as good IT skills (Microsoft Office or equivalent). You must appreciate the need to comply with Standard Operating Procedures and have the ability to work under pressure and as part of a team. Communicating well with others and dealing with members of the public in a polite and diplomatic fashion are also essential.

The role will include:

  • Addressing participants questions and concerns regarding all aspects of the study
  • Supervision and support of touchscreen consent and questionnaire functions
  • Completion of interview questionnaire and blood pressure measurement
  • Measuring participants blood pressure and pulse, hand grip strength, hip/waist circumference, standing height, sitting height, weight/body impedance, spirometry and heel ultrasound (when implemented)
  • Cleaning and calibration of physical measurement equipment
  • Venepuncture
  • Blood sample handling and storage
  • Conclusion of participant visit
  • Urine sample collection, processing and storage
  • Support monitoring visits, audits and inspections
  • Document and report serious adverse events and incidents
  • Provision of first aid
  • May be requested to undertake duties commensurate with receptionist post

Phlebotomy Technician
Person Specification – Phlebotomist or MLSO/Nurse with Venepucture certificated training
You will need a standard grade education or equivalent in English, experience of working in a customer-focused environment and good IT skills (Microsoft Office or equivalent). The ability to work under pressure, on your own initiative and as part of a team are also key to this role. You must be able to maintain high standards, communicate well with others and deal with members of the public in a polite and diplomatic fashion.

The role will include:

  • Supervision and support of touchscreen consent and questionnaire functions
  • Measuring participants hand grip strength, hip/waist circumference, standing height, sitting height, weight/body impedance, spirometry and heel ultrasound (when implemented)

Physical Measurements Technician
Person Specification – Healthcare Assistant
You will need a good standard grade education, experience of working in a healthcare environment and good IT skills (Microsoft Office or equivalent). The ability to work under pressure and as part of a team is also key to this role. You will have a methodical and well organised approach to work, the ability to communicate well with others and to deal with members of the public in a polite and diplomatic fashion. Understanding and maintaining study participant confidentiality is essential.

The role will include:

  • Supervision and support of touchscreen consent and questionnaire functions
  • Measuring participants hand grip strength, hip/waist circumference, standing height, sitting height, weight/body impedance, spirometry and heel ultrasound (when implemented)
  • Cleaning and calibration of physical measurement equipment
  • Blood sample handling and storage
  • Urine sample collection, processing and storage
  • Support monitoring visits, audits and inspections
  • May be requested to undertake duties commensurate with receptionist post

Assessment Centre Receptionist
Person Specification
You will need a good standard grade education, experience of working in a healthcare environment and excellent IT skills (Microsoft Office or equivalent). The ability to work under pressure and as part of a team is also key to this role. You will be able to demonstrate good inter-personal and oral communication skills, deal with members of the public in a polite and diplomatic fashion and understand the need for confidentiality.

The role will include:

  • Providing an effective and efficient service for the Assessment Centre
  • Welcoming participants, checking and editing their details
  • Generating participant USB key
  • Providing support using touchscreen technology and electronic signature pad
  • Providing refreshments
  • Administering travel expenses claims procedure
  • Support monitoring visits, audits and inspections
  • Inventory control, ordering stationery, consumables and equipment
