Welcome
Dear Candidate,
Thank you for expressing an interest in the role of Chief Executive. This really is an excellent opportunity to make a real difference to people’s lives.
The Foundation was established in 1990.
After six years at the organisation I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience of working for such a worthy organisation and am keen to find a talented individual to continue the good work of the Foundation.
If you feel you have the drive, determination and inspirational leadership skills we would be keen to hear from you.
Yours truly,
Mike Unger

What we do
The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation’s primary role is research into the early detection of lung cancer. The Foundation has developed a Liverpool Lung Project which is a research programme into the early stages of lung cancer.
The multi-million pound investment by the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation into the early detection of lung cancer is supported by the development of international collaborations with both academic institutions and commercial organisations in Europe and the USA. The Liverpool Lung Project has been accredited by the National Cancer Research Institute and makes a major contribution to lung cancer trials in the UK.
The charity operates from its headquarters in Liverpool, which is the focus for its research, tobacco control, fundraising and administrative activities.
The vision of The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation is to defeat lung cancer. The Foundation:
- works towards defeating lung cancer through research, campaigning and education
- provides practical and emotional support for patients and all those affected by lung cancer and smoking
- enables children and young people to make informed decisions about smoking and the tobacco industry
The charity re-invests its profits into the research in lung cancer that it conducts.
Background to the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation
The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation was established by thoracic surgeon Ray Donnelly as the Lung Cancer Fund in 1990.
In 1992, entertainer Roy Castle was diagnosed with lung cancer. A lifelong non-smoker, he adopted a positive attitude to his situation and courageously devoted much of the last year of his life to promoting the work of the charity, to which he gave his name. With the money raised from his moving Tour of Hope, the Roy Castle International Centre for Lung Cancer Research was built.
The Foundation has nine Trustees, these are:-
Sir Philip Carter (Chairman)
Professor Ray Donnelly (Founder)
Lord Falconer of Thoroton
Mr Alastair Gould
Dr David Dunlop
Mr Jim Couton
Ms Sharron Heginbottom
Dame Gill Oliver
Mrs Barbara Elliot
The organisation has 100 employees and also funds 30 research people
