About Us

The Royal Surrey County Hospital was opened in three phases in 1981, 1991 and 1996. As the Royal Surrey County and St Luke’s Hospitals, it became a first wave NHS Trust on 1st April 1991 and became the Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Trust on 1st April 1997 when all remaining services transferred from St Luke’s and Farnham Road Hospitals.

Situated in the heart of Surrey, the hospital provides high quality emergency and other general hospital services to the people of Guildford, Waverley and beyond, extending into West Sussex and Hampshire. The Royal Surrey County Hospital currently provides outstanding clinical care with mortality rates that are the (joint) lowest of any Trust in England.

It is also a centre of excellence for cancer care in Surrey, West Sussex and Hampshire, offering a distinctive service for patients by virtue of its location, the quality and range of treatments on offer.

The Trust has a number of distinctive strengths:

  • Well balanced service portfolio embracing general hospital and specialist services
  • It employs 3,400 staff with a Trust annual income of £150 million
  • Strong University links, enabling it to push the boundaries of clinical care
  • National reputation in some specialities and disciplines eg. Minimal access surgery
  • Outstanding operational and financial performance

The Trust has achieved a significant improvement in its financial position over the last four years. Action has continued to increase overall productivity, the average patient length of stay has reduced and enabled reductions in the use of agency staff and staff numbers have increased, mainly to support the development of services and the transfer of complex surgical cancer treatments to the Trust.
