Welcome
Assistant Director Organ Donation
Thank you for considering joining NHS Blood and Transplant’s Organ Donation and Transplantation Directorate. This is an exciting and unusual job where the successful applicant will have a huge impact on people’s lives.
Organ Donation and Transplantation: dedicated to saving more lives
The UK has amongst the lowest rates of organ donation in Europe and as a result every day at least three people die because they don’t get the transplant they need. NHSBT has been appointed as the UK’s organ donor organisation by all four national governments to overcome this problem.
I joined NHSBT last year after six years as a PCT Chief Executive and a period in acute hospitals. Since my appointment I have been keen to build a strong senior management team to support me in transforming the service and increasing donation by 73%. The Assistant Director Organ Donation is the final appointment to the team and absolutely key to its success. You will be expected to be ambitious, innovative and able to challenge the status quo. You will need to quickly establish your position and lead by example to secure every organ, every time. There are unique challenges created by working in and being responsible for a geographically dispersed team. However, the rewards for leading a high profile UK service are significant.
The Organ Donation and Transplantation Directorate is growing rapidly with a £30 million budget increase in 2009/10 and further increases planned for 2010/11. We are transferring over 100 specialist nursing staff into the organisation and recruiting over 150 more. These staff work all across the UK spending much of their time in acute hospitals with Intensive Care and Emergency Department staff. We are overseeing the appointment of nearly 200 clinical leads for organ donation, the establishment of Donation Committees in every hospital and we are creating a major professional development programme to support these leaders. For the first time we are commissioning dedicated teams of surgeons to ensure high quality organ retrieval.
NHSBT has invested over £3.5 million in an award winning IT system to support the process of organ allocation and intends to further develop our IT infrastructure so it supports every element of the clinical pathway. We are also investing £4.5 million this year alone in a high profile publicity campaign to promote organ donation to the general public.
When we are successful, organ donation will be a usual rather than an unusual event in the UK and many people’s lives will be saved and improved. If you would like to be part of this success and talk over the opportunities that this role can provide, then please contact our retained recruitment consultant at Hays Executive via the 'Apply Now' page.
Thanks again for your interest and I look forward to your application.
Best Wishes
Sally Johnson
Director of Organ Donation and Transplantation
