About the School

Lyng Hall School is a mixed urban comprehensive school, with a distinguished history. We are in relatively new buildings and have excellent modern facilities, especially for computers and technology.

There are currently fifty members of teaching staff and a full complement of non-teaching staff to support the work of the school.

  • Our admission limit is 150
  • 37% of pupils come from ethnic backgrounds
  • 37% of pupils are eligible for free school

Over the last few years we have developed and extended our strategy to work with pupils and their parents. In this way we hope to provide a full range of support that will allow all pupils in this deprived inner city area to achieve or exceed their potential. Our results show very clearly that this strategy is working better than we had expected. This year we will open a Family Learning Centre. This is two houses adjacent to the school from which we will run a series of social, emotional, behavioural and health related programmes for pupils and their families. Programmes will include opportunities for parents to achieve accreditation alongside their children.

We are a relatively small school in which we are able to know every pupil well and insist that he or she does his or her best at all times. We want pupils to be happy at school and new pupils are given a special welcome and special consideration. We have a very simple 5 line code of conduct which is constantly reinforced. Our behaviour tracking and management systems have been widely recognised for their impact and innovative approach to behaviour management.

The main aim of the school is to help all pupils to learn well. We are committed to giving every Lyng Hall pupil a happy, busy and successful school career that is suited to young people’s needs and interests. We had successful OFSTED inspections in 2001 and 2006 and ambitious plans have been implemented to bring about further improvements. We now have examination results of which we are rightly proud.... but there is no complacency and we can see lots of ways to make them even better. Our recent successful improvements have been featured in the local press and radio and on the television. We have enjoyed the full support of parents.

The school aims to offer to its pupils a wide range of experiences including equal access to a broad and balanced curriculum.

We aim to create a climate of a successful, supportive and positive school community in which every pupil acquires the skills and qualities necessary to:

  • Achieve the highest possible standard of education and realise that education is a life long process.
  • Play an active and responsible role in the school and the wider community.
  • Have a sensitive awareness and respect for others irrespective of gender, race, class, religion and disability.
  • Have a positive attitude to the culturally diverse community of the school.
  • Enjoy the challenge of hard work and encourage its successful completion in themselves and others.
  • Become successful learners, responsible citizens and confident individuals.

Good learning takes place when a child is secure and confident at school. All the staff at Lyng Hall are involved in the care of our pupils. We strive to provide a community based on respect and encourage a sense of pride and belonging. We have been a leading school in the city re. Implementation and development of SEAL for the last two years.

All Key Stage 3 pupils are taught the National Curriculum. The weakest and / or most vulnerable pupils in year 7-9 are taught in Foundation groups where they spend the majority of their week with one or two teachers in their own room. This is proving to be enormously successful: the focus on literacy and numeracy has seen some pupils reading age increase from 6 years to 10 years during one academic year.

At Key Stage 4 there is a compulsory core of English, Maths, Science, Languages, P.E., R.E., and ICT. All pupils study at least one vocational option and there is a wide range of alternative accreditations available. Many pupils attend day placements at the local College. We have moved away from the traditional options pattern and now offer pupils a series of individualised pathways giving them a range of appropriate experiences which will lead to the achievement of a range of appropriate level1 and level2 courses. We avoid limiting children! There are an increasing number who take GCSE’s, other qualifications and even A levels while they are still in KS3!! Personal, Social and Health Education is taught through other curriculum subjects but with an emphasis on the Humanities subjects.

Special Educational Needs is provided both with in-class support and small group withdrawal. 20% of the pupils are on the SEN register of which eighteen are statemented.

ICT facilities in the school are excellent. All classrooms have digital projectors and a dedicated PC, most have an interactive whiteboard. All staff have a laptop computer for their personal use. There are four large suites of high performance PC’s and a number of smaller subject based suites of PC’s or laptops. All computers in the school are connected to the internet via our broadband wireless network. We are currently experimenting with new video conferencing technology that has been installed in the school, and, the use of Bluetooth as a way of sharing information with the pupils.

We have a well developed VLE which can be seen at www.lynghallschool.co.uk

“Pupils relate well to one another and their teachers. There is very little bullying or oppressive behaviour.” Ofsted 2001

The school is one of the first in Coventry to become a Trust school. This is giving us the opportunity to form a Charitable Trust with Directors from a range of local organisations who will help us to develop our approach to working with families and the wider community and, improve links with the business and enterprise sector.

We offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities incorporating sport, drama and community involvement. Trips are organised both in this country and abroad.

This is a successful, dynamic and forward looking school. If you are ambitious, willing to take risks and try new things and, excited about having the opportunity to improve the life chances of generations of children, apply for a post here and join our team.
