Background: research, search and selection practice
Research whetted my appetite for recruitment – it’s a great way to get into search, through handling headhunting assignments, making telephone approaches to potential candidates and preparing reports for consultants.
I was initially attracted to Hays because of the in-depth training and international opportunities. I was one of the team who helped set up an office in Lyon for Hays France, which was a tremendous challenge – not just professionally but from a cultural perspective – and extremely rewarding.
On my return, I opted to build on my experience – so now I focus on international search. My assignments vary but my specialist expertise is real estate – investment, brokerage and management. I’ve invested a lot of time and effort to understand the industry, develop a strong network of contacts across Europe and keep up-to-date with the changes and trends in the market. I attend major international conferences each year, enabling me to expand my networks, as well as developing relationships with colleagues in Hays’ European offices.
For me, search is about much more than just recruitment – you work more closely with the client, from consulting on the job description and establishing core competencies through to devising tailored assessment tools.
I’m now in my 10th year at Hays – with no end to the challenges ahead. I love that it’s a genuine meritocracy – people can dictate the pace of their own progression.
It’s not all work, work, work though. I’m shortly going to be joining a Hays team on a fortnight’s trek and community project in Kenya to raise funds for our corporate charity, Marie Curie Cancer Care. The support we’ve received from the board and the company as a whole has been exceptional, and that’s made all the difference.
