Head of Practice, Financial Markets
Background: niche City search and selection practice

I joined Hays because of its global reach. My clients are investment banks and the ability to source people internationally is incredibly important – talent is either thin on the ground or it’s over-bid. Being able to find people from or for places like Dubai, Sydney or Hong Kong is crucial, and Hays has offices in all those places and more – something few pure search firms can boast.

A big plus for me has been the opportunity to really expand my part of the business. We’re relatively young in this sector, so I’ve been able to build up my area without worrying about butting up against colleagues. If you’re entrepreneurial, Hays gives you all the tools you require – if you need to hire, you can; if you need to travel abroad, you can. There’s huge scope for self-development, and there’s nothing set in stone that will stop you – for instance, someone with a background in equity sales needn’t be restricted to recruiting just for equities.

The networks we call on go beyond just other offices of Hays Executive – Hays Banking has strong relationships for contingency business with all the big names. We can accompany consultants to those meetings and offer the complete, joined-up service – a capability that’s increasingly sought by clients.

In the office, working alongside people who recruit executives for other sectors or job disciplines is always a valuable learning experience. Often, some of the work they do – their ideas, their marketing collateral and the pitches they prepare – are useful to adapt for my clients or potential business. I’ve never had to consider myself as a stand-alone silo, as I might do in a boutique search practice. I’m part of a much bigger family, yet I still have freedom – in a business that’s fully committed to search.
