Imperial War Museum, North (Manchester)

Located on the south bank of the Manchester Ship Canal and opened in July 2002, the Imperial War Museum - North project faced many challenges, not least in the realisation of the form of the building. The architect has depicted war as earth shattering and has created a building made from three shards of a shattered globe, representing the three elements, earth, wind and water. Three distinct shapes clash with each other to create an angular and curved building. In 2003 this was the winner of the Building Award at the British Construction Industry Awards.
