Beddington Zero Energy Development

Beddington Zero Energy Development, or BedZED as it commonly known, is an environmentally-friendly, energy efficient mix of housing and workspace which has turned a disused sewage works into an affordable, attractive and viable example of sustainable living. Developed by the Peabody Trust and architect Bill Dunster, BedZED brings together the latest thinking on sustainability and energy conservation.

The development is almost entirely carbon neutral, as all of the site's energy and heating requirements are provided by a woodchip-burning heat and power plant, supplemented by photovoltaic "solar" cells mounted with the glazing.

BedZED is relatively high density, providing 82 homes and 1,500 square metres of workspace on a 3.5 acre site, along with onsite facilities including a sports pavilion, nursery, organic shop/cafe and health centre.

Gardiner & Theobald provided cost management, construction management and planning supervision on the project as well as facilities management and tax advice to the Peabody Trust. This project was shortlisted for the Stirling Prize 2003.

Project Value: £15 mil
