Career Profiles

Jonathan Ingham
Trainee Quantity Surveyor

I am currently a trainee quantity surveyor with Gardiner & Theobald LLP, undertaking a five-year part time BSc Honours Commercial Management Degree at Southbank University, with the eventual aim of becoming a fully qualified (Chartered) member of the RICS.

Gardiner & Theobald LLP is widely known for its first class training programme in which I have been participating for the last four years. I work full time for Gardiner & Theobald LLP, as well as attending University one day a week. This has been a difficult process, but with the continued support from the firm and my colleagues it has been a rewarding one.

Over the last four years, I have gained valuable experience and developed a thorough understanding of the role of a quantity surveyor. At the beginning of my career, I was assigned a supervisor to assist in my development as a trainee. At this stage, my work consisted of shadowing my supervisor and assisting with day-to-day tasks of a quantity surveyor.

Currently I am the lead surveyor on two refurbishment projects in North London, these projects have enabled me to develop my construction knowledge, whilst gaining valuable experience for future projects. I am also heavily involved with a large prestigious two-stage design and build project. Whilst taking responsibility for the day-to-day running of the project I attend all design team and project team meetings.

Whilst knowing that joining Gardiner & Theobald, as a trainee quantity surveyor would be a difficult route. I have been given tremendous support and encouragement by the firm from the day I started.

As for the future, I hope to successfully complete my degree and enter into Gardiner & Theobald’s structured APC training scheme to gain my chartership with the RICS.
