Career Profiles

Nick Mather, BSc
Director

I joined Gardiner and Theobald Management Services as an Associate Director in January 2001 from Schal, where I had been working as a Project Manager on Construction Management projects in and around London, with Clients such as BP and BA.

I am currently responsible for two projects at Great Ormond Street Hospital - a link project connecting the existing Cardiac Wing to a new theatre and ward facility and the very exciting creation of a new world class Heart and Lung Institute for the Young. The latter is a more complex project, which relies on the sourcing and fit-out of a new Corporate Office space near to the Hospital to accommodate staff from an existing building on the GOSH site, in which the new Heart and Lung facility is to be housed. The new Heart and Lung Institute has required considerable interaction between the design team and some extremely busy Users - academics, clinicians and researchers - from both GOSH and the Institute of Child Health who will jointly occupy the building. Both the above projects are being procured using the new NHS Procure 21 route, pioneering the way for future P21 projects at GOSH, particularly in relation to the roll out of their Phase 2 Redevelopment Scheme over the next 15 years.

In early 2004 I successfully completed two significant projects for Imperial College, both designed by signature architects Foster and Partners. The first was a £27m combined new College main entrance and Business School situated in a very prominent and visible location on Exhibition Road. The second was a £15m Headquarters Office building for the Rector and Heads of Faculty located in the heart of their South Kensington Campus.

I have maintained my involvement in the Education Sector and am currently managing a new build Student Residences scheme for University of East London (UEL), providing 825 student beds in five seven-storey blocks. The procurement route was originally envisaged as a PFI scheme but switched to a Design and Build route early in the process. The proposed residences will be located on a brownfield site at the east end of UEL’s Docklands campus, opposite London City Airport, adjacent to Royal Albert Dock and bordered by the DLR to the North.

My first project management role at GTMS was managing the fast track creation of a new 50,000 sqft independent auction room facility and office space for Sotheby’s at Olympia 2, which was completed on time and on budget.

I was promoted to Director in 2003 and have enjoyed being part of a dynamic and forward-looking organisation, where the prospects for the future are excellent on both a company and personal level. I share an open plan office with a blend of young Project Managers and more experienced Partners, where there is the combined knowledge and experience to advise and provide support on any issue that arises.
