Working for Derbyshire Police provides a real opportunity to help make a difference to how we deliver our services.  We see the role of Head of IS playing a central role in the changes that we are trying to make so that we can deliver an even better policing service.

The Head Information Services will have overall responsibility for the Force Information Systems Strategy. They will manage a Department of 45 staff and have overall responsibility for the delivery of ICT services to the Force.

Departments

The Department has two sections that provide these services.

  • The Telecommunications Section provides a range of business critical radio and telephony services to the Force and some other Forces.  Radio Services are based on the national police Airwave service comprising about 3,000 devices in Derbyshire. Telephony Services are based on a number of PABX switchboards at Force sites with some Voice over IP installations. Radio and telephony services are brought together on an ICCS (Integrated Communications Control System) that will be migrated to a single site at HQ in 2009/10.
  • The Computer Services Section provides a range of support and data services to the Force. There are about 2,600 XP workstations supported across some 100 sites.  The force has a total of 150 servers (Microsoft and UNIX) and invariably deploys national police or commercial IT systems; it does not undertake any significant system development activity.

Projects

The Force views IT as an essential part of its plans to provide an even more efficient and effective policing service.  It is making significant investment in IT with an ambitious programme of projects.  These include:-

  • A new Central Contact Management Centre bringing together the forces current 3 control rooms into a central facility.
  • Roll out of mobile data facilities to front line police officers.  This will involve the roll out of hand held devices to front line officers to enable them to access information quickly without the need to return to the police station.
  • Upgrading our Network with microwave technology and VPN.
  • Voice over IP telephony to be rolled out across the whole force over a three year period

At a national level, there are further IT developments, including the Police National Database.

The Head of Information Services will play a key role in these projects and ensuring that the business benefits from these changes are realised.
