The History of CHEP
At the end of the Second World War, the United States Armed Forces left large volumes of materials handling equipment, namely pallets, scattered around the Pacific Islands. The Australian Government hired this equipment to industry from a central pool, known as the Commonwealth Handling Equipment Pool, hence CHEP. In 1958, the Australian Government sold a large portion of the company to Brambles Industries.
CHEP expanded across the globe, entering Europe in 1974, the US in 1990, the Pacific Rim in 1994, Latin America in 1995 and, most recently, China.Brambles Limited owns 100% of CHEP and is a listed company on the Australian stock market, with a secondary listing in London. Its global headquarters is in Sydney. There is now a common approach to business, using the Six Sigma approach and sharing best practices throughout CHEP’s international operations.
Brambles is regularly voted one of Britain’s Most Admired Companies in the annual study by Mercer Human Resources Consulting in conjunction with Management Today.
