Southend on Sea
The largest town in Essex, Southend is the nearest seaside resort to London.
Traditional seaside attractions, seven miles of glorious coastline, fresh sea air, art galleries, theatres, museums, superb shops, beautiful parks and gardens, restaurants, pubs, nightclubs and music venues combine to form a vibrant, cosmopolitan town with something to suit all ages, tastes and cultures.
Exciting changes are continuing in Southend to achieve its vision to become a major centre for culture, entertainment and leisure.
For a day out, short break or holiday, Southend has everything - from thrilling adventure rides to leisurely coastal walks, stimulating art or the magic of the theatre.
A warm welcome awaits you!
Whether you're looking for action-packed water sports, somewhere for the children to play, build sandcastles and paddle, a relaxing stroll along a picturesque shoreline or a family picnic by the sea, Southend has the perfect beach to suit your needs.
Southend is a watersports enthusiast's paradise and its sparkling waters are a hive of activity for kite-surfing, windsurfing, personal watercraft, sailing and much more.
Its seven miles of prized foreshore at the mouth of the Thames Estuary is a haven for wildlife. Telescopes and information at many vantage points along the seafront will help you discover the abundance of habitats and birds.
On the seafront, the longest pleasure pier in the world attracts a wealth of visitors, many determined to walk the 1.33 miles to the end and take in the beautiful view from the pier head. Dotted amongst the main attractions, many cafés and restaurants spill out onto the promenade and in close proximity to the shore lies Southend’s bustling High Street, with a further range of shops and cafés catering for your every need.
If museums and galleries appeal to you more, there’s plenty just waiting to capture your imagination, as well as theatres, parks and beaches…all anticipating your exploration.
If you’re looking for a classic British meal, or maybe to try something completely new, Southend offers a vast range of international foods to suit a variety of different tastes. From traditional seaside fayre to the delicacies of Japanese sushi (Southend having the only Japanese restaurant in Essex), the town is a natural choice for those wishing to dine out.
With around 300 places to eat in the Borough, Southend is proud of its choice of global cuisine, including French, Spanish, Indian, Italian, Chinese, Greek, Portuguese, Mexican, British, American, Japanese and Thai delights.
Along with good quality food, there’s a real magnitude of friendly entertainment, dancing, cabaret and music to complement your meal.
And remember - a visit to Southend-on-Sea wouldn’t be complete without trying at least one of our local specialities!
The pedestrianised High Street is served by two railway stations with direct links from London – Southend Victoria on the One Great Eastern line from Liverpool Street and Southend Central on the C2C line from Fenchurch Street.
The Royals Shopping Centre, at the south of the High Street, is a popular mall where shoppers can leisurely browse a variety of shops beneath the shelter of its elegant glass-domed roof. Towards the north of the High Street lies Victoria Plaza Shopping Centre and the Broadway.
Throughout the year a series of events in the High Street present unique buying opportunities. Look out for regular Farmers’ Markets, French Markets and Southend’s Christmas Spectacular & Lights.
