Background

Although we are titled as a Grammar School we are, in fact, a large voluntary aided 11-18 comprehensive school with 1915 students on roll (385 in the VI Form). The school has a long tradition dating back to 1529, when a series of wealthy benefactors from among the people of Bingley provided a trust to support the education of the young people of the town. In the 1990s, the school was Grant Maintained but it has now returned to its former ‘Voluntary Aided’ status. Situated on the edge of Bingley, the School underwent a major £4.5 million expansion and refurbishment project in 2000 to provide new teaching facilities, a new Hall, Library and Learning Resource Centre.

I took up post as Headteacher in April 2006 and since that time we have made good progress in developing our school to achieve our two aims:

  • To increase student learning (social and academic)
  • To improve examination results

We were inspected in December 2006 and the inspection report identified our good capacity to improve. I am pleased to say that our improvement is now measurable, for example our KS3 results went up by an average of 10% last year and our %GCSE 5+A*-C (including English and Maths) went up by 12%. However, one of our greatest areas of development has been in the classroom where our learners now benefit from a rich diet of learning opportunities to cater for their different learning styles. In addition the culture of the school is now positive where students and staff embrace change in support of developing learning.

We were designated as a Specialist Business and Enterprise College in September 2006 and are strengthening relationships with our feeder primary schools, local businesses and the community as a result. We do have a budget deficit that is in the process of being repaid and as a result all expenditure is scrutinised critically. However, we have successfully managed the first year of our repayment plan with a small carry forward into this financial year.
