Our vision is an exciting, innovative and challenging one that will be at the heart of the regeneration of East Basildon. In order to deliver our vision, we need to appoint outstanding people who not only share our enthusiasm, aspirations and commitment but also bring to the post a proven track record of success.
As linked Academies we will challenge current ways of doing things and make a step change in the life chances available to the young people of East Basildon. More of the same will not do and we are determined to make the most of the Academy programme. The Academies will have a strong focus on raising standards and the level of expectation of all students. The decision to have Enterprise and Mathematics as our specialisms and to develop an Enterprise Zone illustrates our commitment to develop strong and practical links with the business and commercial world.
The Academies, therefore, have a new approach to school leadership, governance, management and organisation. The creation of two linked Academies, one for 11-14 yr olds and one for 14-19 yr olds, within a single Trust and with a single Governing Body, has enabled us to develop an innovative curriculum and organisational structure to support outstanding teaching and learning. We will pioneer new approaches to student groupings (with self-contained “colleges” of 150 students) and pastoral care (we will host a wide range of support services from a large number of agencies and disciplines) and, to facilitate this, an imaginative and far reaching capital building programme is underway.
The main focus of both Academies will be on creating the means by which all of our students have the opportunity to achieve their potential and be confident and enthused about their future.
All of this highlights the need for us to appoint teachers of the highest calibre who will be responsible for the learning experience of our students, ensuring that students meet or exceed their targets. This is an unusual and exciting professional opportunity to join a Curriculum Strand, teach in an exciting and innovative environment to ensure the success of all students.
Faced with a lot of choice and a mountain of paperwork to read from schools that you might be considering, what follows is just a brief guide to the kind of support we offer new teachers.
If called for interview candidates are invited to spend the day with us, touring the Academies, visiting classes and meeting other staff. You may be asked to teach part of a lesson; if so, you will be given notice of which class and the topic to be covered. In our experience, applicants welcome this opportunity to demonstrate their teaching skills and it gives them a chance to interact with pupils. Appointments are made on the day of the interview, with an opportunity for the debriefing of unsuccessful candidates.
We go out of our way to make candidates feel at home. Our staff are extremely friendly helpful and very supportive of each other. Ours is a very young staff whose average age is under 30 and we look after each other’s interests by informal networks of help and guidance. Within the Academies, teachers meet every morning for a briefing and the atmosphere in the staff room is buoyant. Applicants will see this for themselves when they arrive for interview.
Finally, taking up a new post – perhaps away from home in a different part of the country – is a big step. Finances play an important part, as does accommodation and transport. But you can be sure of helpful and expert advice from colleagues in the Academies.
I hope very much that you will be in touch, if only to find out more. We really are looking forward to hearing from you.
