South Leeds High School is an inclusive school where the needs and aspirations of all its members will have the highest value in securing a successful future.
This will be achieved through an ethos in which students, staff and parents have mutual trust and respect for each other and learning for all is the priority.
The school was formed as a result of the closure and amalgamation of Matthew Murray High School and South Leeds Arts College; Merlyn Rees in September 2004. The former schools were approximately 4 miles apart and served catchments that existed either side and ends of the M621. In September 2006, the school was relocated to a brand new building on a campus shared with the South Leeds Stadium, which features an eight lane athletics track, indoor tennis, athletics and bowls arenas and a significant astro-turf facility to accommodate football and field hockey. Leeds’ new Olympic size swimming pool, on the same site, is scheduled for completion during the summer of 2007. The stadium, now called the John Charles Sports Center, is the home of Hunslet Hawks, who are in division two of the national Rugby League.
The school offers a broad and balanced curriculum, which is fairly traditional at key stage 3 with students following the National Curriculum. All students follow programmes of study in English, Mathematics and Science leading to assessment at the end of the key stage through national testing.
Students also follow programmes in Humanities, which includes Geography, History and RE., a Modern Foreign Language, which at this point in time is French. Students are given the opportunity to develop their skills and talents in Art, Drama, Music and Physical Education. Students also follow a course in Information and Communication Technology and a variety of Technology experiences including Food Technology, Graphics, Resistant Materials and Textiles.
