Carrying out an effective health & safety board presentation
The following appeared in the Safety & Health Practitioner magazine in May 2007.
Q: I have been asked to give a presentation on the importance of health and safety to the board of a company that has put me on its shortlist. What advice do you have?
A: Steven Bryan, section manager at Hays Health & Safety, comments:
To make an effective presentation you need to ensure that the context and content are appropriate to your audience. You should also consider the specific skills that the board are looking for you to demonstrate and incorporate evidence of these skills.
Avoid making the presentation too technical – remember that you should be working to engage and interest the audience. If you want to demonstrate technical ability it is best to wait until you are questioned on a specific point.
Try using real-life examples to show how effective health and safety management can be of benefit to the company. Once you have sold good health and safety practice to them, you can advise how you could effectively implement and improve their current policies and procedures.
You should back up what you say with recent scenarios to keep their interest and clearly demonstrate the relevance of effective H&S management to their business.
