Working with Trade Unions IRS Conference 2008

Working with Trade Unions - 5th June 2008
Guoman Hotel, The Tower, St. Katherine's Way, London E1W 1LD

A legal and strategic guide for employers

Over recent years we have seen a rising number of industrial disputes reported in the press where the repercussions to industry have been high. The recent Royal Mail dispute was estimated to have cost them more than £200m. The statutory trade union recognition scheme and the laws on industrial action, including protection against dismissal for striking employees are complex and often overlooked or misunderstood.

This conference will examine areas of law surrounding trade union recognition, the rights of individual trade union members, collective bargaining and consultations and dispute resolution. Delegates will also hear from senior members of the TUC, CBI and IPA about their views on the future of industry and trade union partnerships; hear a case study from Gloucestershire County Council on how they have strived to maintain a good working relationship with their trade union partners; as well as hear first hand about last year’s Royal Mail industrial dispute and what lessons they have taken away from the situation.

Highlights Include:

  • Learn how to manage the process of trade union recognition and de-recognition and information and consultation in the workplace
  • Get to grips with the individual rights of trade union members
  • Hear from the TUC, CBI and the IPA with their views on whether industry and trade unions can work in partnership in the 21st Century
  • A case study showing how Gloucestershire County Council maintain a good relationship with their trade unions
  • Hear first hand about what led to industrial action and wild cat strikes at Royal Mail and what lessons have been learnt as a result
