Corporate social responsibility for energy jobs providers

In the UK, there are six major energy jobs providers generate electricity and compete to sell electricity and gas to businesses and consumers. Each has developed its own policy to appear more eco friendly and to attract the growing sector of conscious consumers.

For example, EDF Energy recently launched its Climate Balance scheme which allows its customers to balance the impact of their energy emissions by contributing through their energy bill to a wide range of sustainable energy projects. RWE npower sends businesses that switch to them an energy efficiency pack which includes an Electrisave monitor.

Britain may be leading the way in terms of renewable energy and this has attracted the international companies keen to get in on the act. In the UK, Scottish Power is a leader on the renewables energy front as the company is the country’s biggest generator and developer of wind electricity.

Corporate Social Responsibility in the energy industry

Just why are these corporations so keen to be green? Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is important for any company, but especially so for energy companies following an increase in eco-focused consumers. Evidence from the Goldman Sachs Energy Report (August 2005) suggests that good CSR management not only improves energy companies’ share performance, but also enhances their access to resource opportunities.

It can also prove attractive to professionals looking for energy jobs and may help to give you an advantage over your competitors. All businesses need to operate with a view to their consumption and conservation of energy, including the energy companies themselves and they can often make substantial low cost savings as a result.

At a time of rising energy prices and global concern over our energy future, companies should give even greater emphasis to this part of their approach to CSR. These strategies are not ‘soft’ additions to the business; they are indispensable components ofthe business. Nowhere is this more apparent than the energy sector with its vast international presence and impact in often the poorest and most unstable parts of the world.
