Wind farms create energy jobs in the UK

The energy for a quarter of London’s homes could be generated by one of the world’s biggest wind farms. Plans have recently been submitted by the consortium, London Array Limited, to build one of the world’s biggest wind farms in the Greater Thames Estuary.

Wind farms to provide energy

London Array Limited won the right to lease an offshore site between the Essex and Kent costs in December 2003 but only recently applied to the government and local planning authorities for permission to develop the area.

The £1.5bn wind farm could see 270 turbines over 152 sq miles (245 sq km) in the Greater Thames Estuary. Due to be built 12 miles (20 km) off shore by 2011, the wind farm could produce up to 1,000 megawatts of renewable energy, reducing carbon dioxide by 1.9m tones each year. The consortium is comprised of E.ON UK Renewables, Shell WindEnergy and CORE Limited.

Creating thousands of energy jobs

Wind farms have become a popular choice for Government seeking to reduce CO2 emissions as stated in the Kyoto agreement. As fossil fuel prices increase and wind turbines become cheaper to build, wind power may even become one of the cheapest forms of electricity over the next 15 years. They will certainly help the government meet its target to have renewables provide 10% of the UK’s electricity by 2010.

The renewable energy market has huge potential for the UK manufacturing industry. The global market for offshore renewables is predicted to be worth £8bn by the end of 2007 and will feature mainly in Europe. The UK government predicts the industry could sustain up to 35,000 jobs by 2020.
