With more than 15 years of experience in the financial function, Fred Bunker has worked for a range of companies in the sports industry, from the New York Jets to Madison Square Garden. As the official recruitment partner of New York City Football Club, Hays placed Fred with the club in 2016 and recently caught up with him to discuss his career, experience with NYCFC, and advice for aspiring financial leaders.

What was the career path that brought you to NYCFC?
I’ve been fortunate to spend my entire career working in multiple aspects of the sports industry, gaining experience with the New Jersey Devils, New York Jets, Madison Square Garden and most recently the NBC Sports Group.
What skills and experience do you think is necessary to become a VP of Finance?
The foundation starts with strong financial technical skills. Beyond that I think it’s important to spend time with the key business operators to better understand their needs. Those learnings are critical for building trust and forming strong internal partnerships to meet financial objectives.
How does working in football (soccer) compare to your previous industry?
I really enjoyed working within the media side of sports but missed the connection of being a part of a team. The feeling in the office of being so emotionally vested in team performance is something no other industry can replicate.
What advice would you give to those aspiring to work in the sports industry?
This industry is evolving rapidly and professional growth may not be linear, so don’t be afraid to get your foot in the door and carve out your own opportunities.
