IT Market Report: What Employers Want

Posted by David Brown, Executive Vice President, Veredus, a Hays company, on Tuesday, Jun 21, 2016

Hays Blog: What Employers Want Report introductionThe newest edition of What Employers Want finds demand for experienced IT professionals shows no sign of slowing down, but what skills do you need to succeed?

From technical skills including development and security expertise, to the softer side of business and people skills, the right combination of skills, experience and personality will maximize your market value.

Technology is so pervasive that it’s not just technology companies and those on the frontier of new developments who are hiring for advanced IT skills. Every employer has a website, many have mobile apps, are investing in automation or selling online. We always encourage our clients to plan ahead, to prepare actively for their future technology needs, but as more and more employers invest in technology, it creates even more demand for IT professionals.

Despite this high demand, employers are not willing to settle for less experience or fewer skills. To reach the peak of your career you will need more than just technical skills. Almost 80 percent (78%) of IT employers would pay more for the right soft skills, and we are seeing increasing demand for candidates who can look beyond their task list or project to integrate IT and business objectives.

Employers are looking for candidates with strong business acumen, business intelligence, communication skills and those who can help the business drive strategy or its objectives. Even if you have the most in-demand technical skills, you could be rewarded with higher compensation and faster career growth if you focus on improving your business understanding, interpersonal and other soft skills.

Over the next few weeks I'll be looking in detail at the different demands and trends in the market. Follow us on social media to make sure you see the latest articles, and register now to get a copy of the guide.
