The good news? It's also an industry that rewards that work.
Work ethic is rated as the #1 soft skill that VPs need, and 45% say work load or work pressure are the biggest challenges that impede on their personal time. Of those who second-guessed their career at some point, one-third said it was due to the stress or lack of work-like balance that comes from the work load.
“Work harder than the guy at the next desk, learn more, build better relationships," says Justin Jeffus, Vice President, Retail Services, Mycon General Contractors. "This is a competitive field and if you’re determined to succeed then you will bring that work ethic to every task you have, whether you’re a laborer or a VP.”
And that I think is key – from the field to the boardroom, this is an industry that demands a lot of time and energy – but it’s also an industry that truly rewards that effort. You get out what you put in.
